getting to know me: my story

With the launch of my new blog/design, I thought this would be a good opportunity to tell my story.  The new blog name has a double significance.  It not only reflects the main theme of my blog posts -- shiny and happy -- but it also reflects a brand new, shiny happiness that I've just recently acquired.  Here is the story of my journey to The Shiny Happy.

Sometimes you reach a point in your life where there’s so much to say.  I’m there.

Where exactly do you start telling a story that has been unfolding for years?  Should you be completely transparent with your feelings and risk the vulnerability?  I sit at the crossroads.

One path seems safe.  A road where I “beat around the bush” and offer vague answers to all the questions being tossed my way.  The other takes me on a journey of openness and honesty, being real & hoping it can help someone else in a similar situation.

I know to expect criticism.  While my intentions are not to “air out dirty laundry”, I realize that some may see it that way.
But I have to realize that this is my story, too.

My ex-husband and I met on a bus headed to church camp when we were both just 9 years old.  Fast forward 10 years later and we were going on our first date on a hot, summer night in July.  We were engaged in October and got married in March.

Life began just as it usually does for most newlyweds.  We skipped through without a care in the world.  Life was perfect and we were young, dumb and living on love.

When you’re that young, you typically ignore warning signs in relationships; especially in marriage.  Your mother can make comments about things that “don’t sit well with her”, but you ignore it.  At that age, your rose-colored glasses portray such a foggy depiction of what’s real.

It's truly a life-changing day when you finally realize your worth.

As much as I hate to admit it, it took me a little longer than most to come to this realization.  I've been known to be a people-pleaser.  My tendencies to take flight from confrontation transferred into friendships and even marriage.  I lived in constant fear of someone not "liking me" as if it would be detrimental to my livelihood.  Thoughts about my own feelings or needs were consistently placed on the back-burner in order to keep others content.  And honestly, I was quite comfortable with life.  My belief was that by making everyone else happy, that I had found true happiness.
Boy, was I wrong.

A little over a two years ago, the happy little world that I had built up came crashing down all around me.  Oddly enough, I was shocked as I scrolled through emails and instant messages on my husband’s laptop.  If I'm really being honest with myself, I saw it coming many months before.  His disinterest in me practically announced itself on a daily basis.  But again, I was a pro at avoiding confrontation...believing foolishly that if I ignored it, those red flags would just go away.  Never leaving his phone lying around.  Coming home late.  The box of condoms found under the car seat.  But now,  emails with names and dates going back two years made everything almost tangible.

Nonetheless, I felt completely blindsided by my situation.  My first reaction was to withdraw myself.  Once a social butterfly, my days now consisted of coming straight home from work and just sitting in the same chair everyday.  I had no desire to talk about it.  No desire to even be around anyone.  I was tired of pretending that I was alright.  Tired of being strong.  My mind was locked away in a prison of "what if" questions whose answers I was terrified to know.  I could leave, but “what if” he doesn’t care enough to come for me?  The fact that I even had to ask that question should’ve said it all.

Despite the train wreck that was now my marriage, I chose to stay and attempt to work things out.  As if it was even possible for things to get worse, they found their way to accomplish that.  Instead of improvement, communication had shut down completely.  Requests to attend marriage counseling were repeatedly shot down.  Next, his Facebook marital status was deleted, along with every picture of me on his profile.   The man who I lived with and shared a bed with was deleting me from his life.

Had it not been for amazing leadership in my life, I could have lost myself during that time.  Their phone calls and encouragement helped me keep my head.  I'm so thankful for their hands in my life.

It was one of those phone calls that sparked something in me one Saturday night.  I answered and heard the voice on the other end ::
"Amber, I need you to get up, get dressed and get out of the house today."

As much as I hated to, I did.

I spent the night surrounded by my amazing friends.  Maybe I wasn't as talkative as usual, but I was doing a lot of thinking.  However, it was one pressing thought that would not leave:
"What makes me feel as if I don't deserve to be happy?"

As much as I wanted to convince myself that I wasn't miserable, I just couldn't.  I knew that what I needed was not unreasonable.  I needed to feel loved.
If that was the case, then why didn't I feel like I was WORTH the effort?
It was then I realized that I DID believe I was worth it.  I was.  I still am.
But to make the necessary changes to find that, was what hurt the most.  I found that sometimes in order to gain what you're worth, you have to be willing to take a risk.  And so, I did.

If I'm being completely honest, I didn't get the answer I expected.  As a matter of fact, it's not at all like I thought it would end up.  The last effort was one sentence.  “Either we go to counseling, or I think I need to leave.”  The reply also came back as one sentence.  “I think that would be good.”  I flew home to Texas and he didn’t call.

Even after facing my fear and confronting him, I instantly began reflecting on my worth again.  My brief moment of courage had quickly dwindled and sent me spiraling into an abyss of self-consciousness.  My mind wavered to the point where the only thing I felt was uncertainty.  But again, my amazing leadership took their time to counsel me throughout my confusion and I began to realize that I was worth so much more. I realized that I deserved better.

I'm amazed at the transformation that I've seen in myself since coming to this realization.  I’m also amazed at how God truly worked things out.  I have been so blessed to have a man come into my life, which truly loves me and shows me that on a daily basis.  I am blessed to have a love that I thought only existed in the movies and fairytales.  I never knew what I was truly missing until now.
And even more, do you really want to know how God has His hand on our lives?  Eight years ago, I lost a child to miscarriage.  My husband and I were never able to conceive after that.  Fast forward to today.  I marry my amazing husband and become a stepmother to his beautiful daughter.  8 years old.  Born in the same month that my child would have born.

God is truly amazing.  I am humbled that He cares enough for me, despite my inconsistencies, to continually pour out His blessings in my life.  Even when I feel as my life is a shattered mess, He sees me as something of worth.

While I still struggle with self-consciousness, I find myself stronger than before.  It’s easy to allow intimidation and fear to keep us in a prison of unhappiness.  The thing to remember is, the minute you negotiate your self worth and accept less, you say to the world that you are not worthy of anything else.
But for me?  Never again.  I may have been knocked down time and time again, but yet, I rise.

I deserve more than I've allowed myself to receive.  I deserve happiness.  I hope that I can encourage others to rise from their situation and accept the good that He has prepared for them.

I’m so thankful that I now understand that I deserve to be loved.  And for the first time, I truly am.

i'm the kinda girl...

Greetings, friends!  I was over on Allie's blog - Tales of a Twenty Something, and I found out that yesterday's cool thing to do was to talk about yourself.

So, today's topic is:  "I'm the kinda girl who..." thanks to Holly at Hey, Hollywood.
And awaaaay we go....

I'm the kinda girl who...

+ prefers action movies to chick flicks.

+ hates talking on the phone.  Texts are sufficient communication.

+ laughs at myself...constantly.

+ overthinks everything.

+ thinks birthdays are super important...and that they should be celebrated.  I believe in birthday months.

+ lays in my bed in the mornings until the last possible minute.

+ considers myself an optimistic realist.

+ is not camera shy.

+ gives way too many second chances.

+ sings and dances in the car like a star.

+ lives by her calendar and all of its color-coded goodness.

+ loves getting flowers even though I can't will them to live for very long.

+ gets waaaay too much satisfaction from alphabetizing things.

+ wants all the coffee.

+ has a brain full of useless information...especially when it comes to music or pop culture.

+ gets cabin fever...a lot.

+ loves spending time with her husband more than anyone else.

+ has very versatile music tastes.  My collection can have me spittin' mad rhymes one minute and relaxing to smooth jazz the next.

+ thinks that coconut EVERYTHING tastes wonderful.

+ believes that ice cream possesses magical powers.

+ over-analyzes every new social situation after the fact, and determines where my awkward/dorkiness fell on a scale from 1 to 10 (usually hovering around a 6).

+ gets unreasonably excited about buying a new planner....or highlighters.

+ has no problem going cliff-jumping on a whim, but will stand in the store aisle forever while debating which toothbrush to purchase.

+ hates her feet....and probably yours, too.  Feet are gross.

+ loves to make new friends.

winner, winner!

You guys!  I received my very first blog award!  The awesome Angel from Diary of an Alien gave me the Liebster Award!

I'm seriously excited about this, folks.  (It doesn't take much.  I'm easy to please.)

Okay. Here are the rules. When you get the award, you have to...
1. Link the person who nominated you.
2. Share 11 random facts about yourself.
3. Answer the 10 Liebster questions given by the person who nominated you.

4. Pick 10 bloggers with under 200 followers to be nominated for the award.
* I assume that's under 200 on Bloglovin but I can't be certain.

5. Come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer.

6. Notify your nominees by commenting on their blogs.

Nominees: PLEASE comment on this post with the link to your post.

I recently posted about my confessions with 10 little known facts about me. I guess I will have to dig a little more, or get a little more creative with these.  So, without further delay I present 11 random facts about me.

1. As a kid, I wanted to be a rodeo clown when grew up.  My dad told me that I couldn't be one because I was a girl, so I settled on dreaming to be a professional barrel racer.
2.  I am an unmedicated, well-adjusted ADHD kid.  At least I consider myself to be well-adjusted.
3. I am a drummer and have been playing for 18 years.  I also play guitar, bass, piano and sing.
4.  I was voted School Clown my junior and senior year of high school.
5.  My brother is a pilot for Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert.
6.  I absolutely love dogs and would probably adopt every one I saw if it was up to me.
7.  I was headed to the University of Texas to study law....but there was this boy.  Stupid life choices 1, Me 0.  I am, however, a Texas Longhorns super fan.
8.  My wrists are my favorite part of my body.  True story.
9.  When I have an OCD "episode," my forearms tingle and ache.
10.  I have lived in Texas my whole life except for the 5 years I lived in California.
11.  I have 2 businesses.  Radwagon Photography & RowdyRooms (mural painting).

And now, here are Angel's questions for me:

1. What is your very first memory of childhood?  Playing my Mickey Mouse "good-tar" at my Mamaw's house in my Care Bear footie pajamas.

2. Do you have any pets?  Yes.  I have a 4 month old Boxer pup named Jackson ("Jax").

3. Would you rather live in the city, country, or suburbs? And where do you live now?  I have always preferred living in the country.  I currently live in "town."

4. What book do you think I should read?  If you haven't already, read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies".  Golden.

5. If someone gave you a million dollars BUT said you don't get to keep it for yourself... you have to use it to make positive changes in the world... what would you do with it?  I would definitely use it to fund a legit music program at my alma mater in honor of my music mentor, Jeff Sweet.

6. What is your favorite fast food restaurant?  Sonic!  Cherry Diet Coke.  Orange Vanilla Sprite.  Purple O.  Yaaayy!!

7. What band do you think I should check out?  Knox Hamilton.  Love those guys!

8. What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas....soooo much.

9. What do you want for Christmas?  A house!  I think we've finally found the one!

10. Who would win in a fight... Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny?  I'm putting my odds on the Easter Bunny.  Rabbits are scrappy and pack a pretty mean kick.

Okay. Whew.
I now have to nominate ten people for this award. This is also going to be hard because I have no clue who's already been nominated.  I'll just pick 10 of my fave blogs.

8 Bit Heart
The Pixel Party

If you've already gotten it before, I totally won't be mad if you skip it this time around!

OK. If you do choose to participate, here are your ten questions...
1.  What is the #1 most played song on your iPod?
2.  If you were reincarnated as an animal/drink/ice cream flavor, what would it be?
3.  Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
4.  If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
5.  If you were to get a tattoo, what (and where) would it be?
6.  What’s one guilty pleasure you enjoy too much to give up?
7.  If you could have any pet in the world, illegal or not, what would you get?
8.  What is the most exciting thing you have ever done?
9.  If you could change your first name, what would it be?
10. What song(s) do you find yourself humming/singing most often
And with that, we are done!
Whew.
Thanks again, Angel!

getting to know me: the mom.

I know that most people who have a good relationship with their parents usually say that they're the best.  I listen to this in total skepticism.  I believe that to them they are the best.  But they haven't met my mom.  They don't know Shannon!  Because if they did, they would understand that all they have ever known about "good parents" is simply generic.

Let me first explain that I am not a kiss-up.  If anything, I'm usually one of the most straight-forward (yet tactful) people you'll know.  But I honestly believe that I am one lucky girl to have a mom like mine.

Our relationship is not the typical parent/child relationship, but a true friendship.  I don't roll my eyes at the fact that my mom is on Facebook.  I would honestly be more inclined to encourage her to get one if she wasn't already a pro.  I don't get embarrassed when she comes and goofs off with my friends.  Where do you think I got it?  I don't keep things from her.  I don't sigh when she asks to hang out.  I love her and I love spending time with her.  She's my best friend.  Honestly, we're too much alike.  It's scary.  Saying the same things at the same time, laughing together....we even share our road rage. ;)

We've practically been inseparable since I was born....until I moved to California.  *sigh*  It was then that I realized just how much time we spent together.  How many Saturdays we spent shopping.  How many nights we hung out in our pj's and played Guitar Hero.  I missed "Feed the Children" nights when she would have me and my brother and his family over for dinner every Saturday night.  I missed playing the drums in church and having her look over from the choir loft to make faces at me. I missed rooting on the Texas Longhorns together in our hoodies and baseball caps. I missed my mom.

The longest I went without seeing her, was six months.  I hated it.  If she wanted to move in with me tomorrow, she would have a room.  No questions asked. haha.  I am so glad to be back in Texas and close to her again...even if we are over an hour away.  It's soooo much better than 17,000 miles!

I am definitely my mother's daughter.  If you think I'm bad, let me introduce you to my sensei. ;)

getting to know me: the sanguine.

It's very questionable......why I am who I am.

I'm the typical "sanguine", I suppose. Apt to procrastinate whenever the opportunity arises.
To those of you who were never forced to take the highly-popular "Four Personalities Test", let me explain.

There are four personality types: 1) Choleric, 2) Melancholy, 3) Phlegmatic, and 4) Sanguine. I am INCREDIBLY Sanguine according to this test. By leaps and bounds. I have just a smidge of Melancholy mixed in for good measure.

Sanguine is known as (surprise) the Extrovert, (another surprise) the Talker, and the Optimist. Some of the Sanguine strengths mentioned include:

Appealing personality, talkative, life of the party, good sense of humor, demonstrative, enthusiastic and expressive, cheerful, makes friends easily, loves people, prevents dull moments, and likes spontaneous activities.

So far so good. If it's possible for one to know the REAL me, this would be it. Scary. Of course, I'm not just one little positive super-human running around. Of course, I have those sanguine weaknesses as well. How true.

The weaknesses include: compulsive talker (who me?), exaggerates, too happy for some, has restless energy (amen), has loud voice and laugh, gets angry easily, never grows up, undisciplined, easily distracted (that's the adult ADHD!), hates to be alone, doesn't follow through.

While my Sanquine-esque ways practically rule the roost in my little brain, the Melancholy tendencies arise. Melancholy strengths include: talented and creative, artistic and musical, sensitive, self-sacrificing, sets high standards, schedule-oriented, perfectionist (OCD), orderly and organized.

Funny. I think I may contradict myself. Sanguine/Melancholy is pretty much the equivalent to being ADHD/OCD....or a "spontaneous planner".....a schedule-oriented procrastinator.....an organized person who lacks discipline. How does that work??

Oh well. That's me....according to a test. I must admit, it is pretty accurate.

Now excuse me, I have plans to do something totally unplanned.

the niche: who am I?

The amazing Leslie of LeslieIRL posted an awesome list of questions for writers to find their niche.  What a perfect way for me to introduce myself to you and do a little self-discovery at the same time!  Thanks, Leslie!  You get 20 brilliance points for this one!
