the great house hunt.

The mister and I are currently on the quest to purchase our first house together.  As I look at all these dreamy houses, I reflect on my time as a renter.  Especially as a renter in an apartment.

I'm going to write a book.

After my time in living in an apartment building in California, I feel that others need to be informed of what I like to call "the apartment code."

After leaving the wonder & peacefulness of living in the country here in Texas, I was thrust into apartment life in California. Oh, what a change. I was accustomed to my nearest neighbor being a half mile away. Suddenly, they were a half foot away.

Now, you may be thinking that apartment life is great and I was being a wimp. Let me take you through a normal day in MY building.

First of all, I had a studio apartment. There are no "rooms." The bedroom was in the living room, which was in the office, which was in the kitchen, which was right next to the bathroom door. My neighbor, of course, had the same set up. However, with the help of his "drink of choice," he was constantly falling into everything making the loudest possible noises as things fell off shelves and onto the floor. His lack of balance did not stay in his apartment.  Oh, no!  He also enjoyed evenings of sitting out on the community balcony down the hall while enjoying his beverage. When he decided it was time for bed, he stumbled down the hall alternately bouncing off each wall. How do I know? I watched through my peephole. This came back to bite me the night he bounced off the walls and ran face first into MY door. I held back a startled sound and watched him fall to the ground, moaning, with his beverage in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

In addition to my next door neighbor, I had my beloved neighbor above me on the third floor. He enjoyed nightly runs...on his treadmill. I pictured him smiling as he ran. Stanford t-shirt. Reebok sneakers. His iPod earbuds in listening to ZZ Top. I, on the other hand, was sitting on my couch with all of my breakables and waiting for the "earthquake" to end.

Just to add to all of the fun, over half of the people there smoked a combination of things. This made for interesting smells in the hallway. To entertain myself, I started a game to see if I could guess each element that makes up each day's "mystery aroma."  They mainly consisted of 1) cigarettes & bologna, 2) old sausage biscuits & laundry detergent, & 3) bologna & sunshine. Have I mentioned that these wonderful odors loved to find their way through the crack under my door and into my apartment? Febreeze was my very best friend.

These experiences gave me the desire to write "the apartment code." It is something everyone should know AND practice. At least if I am living in their apartment building.

I know I'm not the only one to experience horrors as an apartment dweller.  Leave a comment and let me know what humorous things you have encountered as a renter!

(not so) sunday social.

So, I just discovered Neely's Sunday Social of at A Complete Waste of Makeup.  Although it is Monday, I really wanted to play along, so I present my first ever (not so) Sunday Social.

This Weeks Questions:

1. What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid? Probably Rainbow Brite.  I loved her!
Me as Rainbow Brite.
2. If you could go back to your childhood and dress up as something, what would it be? Definitely either She-Ra or Jem.  No clue how I got through childhood without doing that!  They were my heroes!

3. What was your favorite Halloween costume as an adult?  Being a true Texan, I had a blast the year that I dressed as a rodeo clown and then walked my friend's miniature pony, "Squat", around town and passed out candy.
Me as Rowdy the Rodeo Clown.

4. What is your favorite Halloween candy? Pixy Stix and Reese's.
5. What is your favorite Halloween memory? Aside from the adventures with Squat, I'd say all the years that my grandparents dressed up to scare me as a child.  Never failed.

6. What is your favorite scary movie?  My little sister has always been the scary movie junkie.  However, in high school, my best friends and I watched "Scream" at LEAST 13 times.  Currently, I'd say "Cabin in the Woods."

Check out other folks' answers over on Neely's Sunday Social post!

What about you??

five senses friday #4.

Five Senses Friday is were I reflect on the last week through the senses.  As usual, Fridays make me a happy girl.  The coffee in my hand helps.  TONS!

Tasting::

Coffee on a cool morning.  Oh, coffee.  I love you.  In case you forgot, last week I was out of coffee!!  Never fear...the universe is aligned once again!  Carry on.

Feeling::

My handsome mister.

Super awesome loves for my mister.  He takes such good care of me.  I love that man!
Also, excitement for next weekend!  My little sis is coming to stay with me so we can hit up the Trades Days on Saturday!  Oooooh!!!!

Super crazy anticipation for my Loot Crate subscription that I just signed up for.  How am I supposed to be able to wait a whole month until it gets here!?!??

Seeing::

Jax sporting his burnt orange in support for our Longhorns.

Gladly accepting donations of MORE! :)

The beginnings of my new set up of "co-workers" on my desk.  Also, the mister and I watched World War Z.  Super awesome, if you ask me.  I was all bundled up with the worried face no more than 4 minutes in.  Yesss!

Hearing::

He was so excited & wiggly, this was all I could get.

All of the girls at the vet "ooh" and "ahh" over Mr. Jax when I took him to get his shots.  He was such a good boy and they all wanted his puppy kisses.

And what's this I hear about Nick Saban house-hunting in Austin!?  Don't toy with my emotions....

Smelling::

My favorite.  The combination of a clean house, a fall breeze and a Scentsy or two.

rawr.

I made a random discovery lately.

It all started with a quest to discover the Texas state fish. (Random, I know....however you must remember who you're talking to here.) So, as I surfed the internet on my handy, dandy iPhone...I found it.

I do have an unhealthy obsession with my iPhone. However, that is the topic of another discussion.

So, as I discovered that the Texas state fish is the Guadalupe Bass, my eyes wandered to a category title that read:

State Dinosaur.

What?!!? Is that really a thing!?

Now, I may be the only person who finds this odd (and incredibly awesome), but to me it's like declaring the state laundry detergent. ...Except for the fact that laundry detergent is not super awesome like dinosaurs!!

Moreover, who gets that job?? It's got to be someone with ADHD. Seriously...I would kill to have it! It's almost like the original "best job ever." That title goes to the first job ever recorded.

Oh yeah.
Mister Adam had it made coming up with names for all of the animals. Leave it to me to want to name things for a living. Just a productive way for me to use my randomness. Awesome.

And in case you were wondering, the Texas state dino is the Pleurocoelus. Never heard of it, but it looks like this:

Pleurocoelus (nhm.ac.uk)

I now expect all of you to research your state dinosaur...if you don't already know it.  Shoot me a message in the comments and let me know what you find!

getting to know me: the sanguine.

It's very questionable......why I am who I am.

I'm the typical "sanguine", I suppose. Apt to procrastinate whenever the opportunity arises.
To those of you who were never forced to take the highly-popular "Four Personalities Test", let me explain.

There are four personality types: 1) Choleric, 2) Melancholy, 3) Phlegmatic, and 4) Sanguine. I am INCREDIBLY Sanguine according to this test. By leaps and bounds. I have just a smidge of Melancholy mixed in for good measure.

Sanguine is known as (surprise) the Extrovert, (another surprise) the Talker, and the Optimist. Some of the Sanguine strengths mentioned include:

Appealing personality, talkative, life of the party, good sense of humor, demonstrative, enthusiastic and expressive, cheerful, makes friends easily, loves people, prevents dull moments, and likes spontaneous activities.

So far so good. If it's possible for one to know the REAL me, this would be it. Scary. Of course, I'm not just one little positive super-human running around. Of course, I have those sanguine weaknesses as well. How true.

The weaknesses include: compulsive talker (who me?), exaggerates, too happy for some, has restless energy (amen), has loud voice and laugh, gets angry easily, never grows up, undisciplined, easily distracted (that's the adult ADHD!), hates to be alone, doesn't follow through.

While my Sanquine-esque ways practically rule the roost in my little brain, the Melancholy tendencies arise. Melancholy strengths include: talented and creative, artistic and musical, sensitive, self-sacrificing, sets high standards, schedule-oriented, perfectionist (OCD), orderly and organized.

Funny. I think I may contradict myself. Sanguine/Melancholy is pretty much the equivalent to being ADHD/OCD....or a "spontaneous planner".....a schedule-oriented procrastinator.....an organized person who lacks discipline. How does that work??

Oh well. That's me....according to a test. I must admit, it is pretty accurate.

Now excuse me, I have plans to do something totally unplanned.

five senses friday #3.

Five Senses Friday is were I reflect on the last week through the senses.  This week has been rather nice.  Not too hectic.  Not too stressful.  I love weeks like these.  I especially love that this Texas heat is subsiding and the cool air is starting to show up.

Without further ado, here is my week...

Tasting::

(sarcasmwithasideofveggies.wordpress.com)
Seems like I've been on a chicken kick this week.  It's been a lot of chicken up until last night.  The mister cooked his smothered pork chops and homemade bread.  YUM!  I'm also out of coffee.  Ugh.  I need to go grocery shopping pretty bad.  Looks like I just made plans for my Saturday...

Feeling::

My favorite road in Bells, Texas.
Nostalgic while driving down the backroads of home...especially my favorite road.
Awesome because I could finally wear a scarf.  Cool breezes blowing through the house from my open windows.  Cold at night because my polar bear of a husband likes to have the windows open AND the fans blowing.  Brrrr....

Seeing::

The wedding cake.

Megan & Uncle David.

My family from my dad's side at my cousin's wedding.  Megan was a gorgeous bride and the wedding & reception were a Pinterest dream!  I loved getting to catch up with everyone.  I especially loved seeing my Uncle David's sweet dance moves.  I'm a proud member of an overly-Caucasian family...
The mister and I also watched "Looper."  Pretty cool, if ya ask me.  Although Joseph Gordon-Levitt trying to look like Bruce Willis was a little hard to get used to.

Hearing::

The rain hitting the windows.  Funny stories from the mister.  Country music blasting at the wedding reception.  Protests from Jax as we teach him to lay down.

Smelling::

The rain.  Home cooking in the kitchen. ....and once again, Jax.

amber's army of awesome.

When I worked for a newspaper while living in California, my friend Dan made me the coolest thing for my desk.

A stand-up paper doll of Mr. T.
He looked just like this. (nickdye.com)

This was the most awesome thing that I had ever seen.  And it was mine!
It was then that I began crafting and creating what I affectionately called, my "Army of Awesome."  They are the defenders of the desk.  The warriors of the work station.  Everyone should have one.

Just think, if you could form an army with any fictional character, person or animal, who would defend your world....er, desk?  It doesn't matter whether they have super strength or are primarily armed with a sharp tongue.  You can choose anyone you want.  That's the beauty.

For inspiration, I present to you:

Amber's Army of Awesome Top 20

1.  Chuck Norris.
(davemhuffman.com)
How anyone can have an army without recruiting THE Chuck Norris, is beyond me.  He's invincible.  True story, bro.

2.  Han Solo.
(darth.wikia.com)
 Why?  He always shoots first.

3.  Wonder Woman.
(wonder-woman.wikia.com)
In a world of ordinary mortals, she is a Wonder Woman...with her indestructible, golden lasso of truth!

4.  Katniss Everdeen.
(bookriot.com)
She's tough.  She's smart. She's brave.  She hunts AND she's a pretty mean archer.

5.  Bruce Lee.
(fanpop.com)
The man brought martial arts to mainstream western cinema.  Not good enough?  Four words:  The. One. Inch. Punch.

6.  Nacho Libre.
(facesoflions.net)
What he lacks in skill, he makes up with heart and determination.

7.  Batman.
(batman.wikia.com)
 He is 1/3 of my "Holy Trinity of Superheroes."  I'll have to expand on that at another time.

8.  Iron Man.
(comicmix.com)
 Another member of the "Holy Trinity of Superheroes."  I have to admit that a lot of my obsession comes from Robert Downey, Jr.'s portrayal of Tony Stark.  Yum!  Plus, he can shoot fireballs out of his hand...so there's that.

9.  Megan (Bridesmaids)
(visualhollywood.com)
 I believe that Megan would take a bullet for me.  I just know she would.

10. Louise Belcher.

(bobsburgers.shoutwiki.com)
 Louise is adventurous, sarcastic & spunky.  Her words alone are weapons.

11.  Rebel Wilson
(blog.zap2it.com)
I'm honestly not sure why, but I feel like she would beat the junk out of anyone that messed with her.

12.  R2-D2.
(theoldrobots.com)
You always need a good support team.  He's mine.  I love him.

13.  Yoda
(collider.com)
 One of the most renowned and powerful Jedi Masters in galactic history.  Enough said.

14.  Hit Girl

(protagonist.wikia.com)

A young but effective vigilante.  Hardened.  Sarcastic.  Well-versed in blades & guns.

15.  Mr. T

(disney.wikia.com)

A "no excuses" straight-shooter equipped with mad wrestling skills and the look of intimidation.  Plus, he rocks a Mohawk.

16. John McClane
(playmakeronline.com)

A wisecracking, no-nonsense New York cop with an itchy trigger finger and a never-say-die maverick spirit…who resembles my husband.

17. Percy Jackson

(conkwright.clarkschools.net)
A half-blood with the powers and might of the Greek gods behind him?  Couldn't hurt.

18. Optimus Prime
(transformers.wikia.com)

A brave & powerful leader with a strong sense of justice and righteousness. That, and he's  a truck.

19. Beatrix Kiddo
(killbill.wikia.com)

Kung Fu master/killing machine equipped with the “Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.”  Boom.

20. Tony Montana
(empireonline.com)

Hey, everybody needs a "bad guy."

So, who would make up YOUR "Army of Awesome?"  Any changes I should make?  Leave me a comment or post your own blog and let me know!

I'm always looking for more recruits...
